The Center was established to investigate one of the most remarkable questions in contemporary economic and entrepreneurial development: how have the societies and economies of the Gulf developed their entrepreneurial capabilities, enterprises, institutions, markets, and ecosystems, and how are these forces shaping the next stage of the region’s transformation? CGES approaches the Gulf not simply as a geographic area, but as a dynamic environment in which entrepreneurship, enterprise, government strategy, global investment, technology, and economic development continuously interact.

The Center’s research begins with the United Arab Emirates, whose development provides an exceptional environment for investigating the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic transformation. CGES studies the historical foundations of commerce and enterprise in the Emirates, the formation and development of the federation, the emergence of Dubai and Abu Dhabi as global economic centers, the distinctive development of Sharjah and the other emirates, and the entrepreneurs, enterprises, institutions, policies, free zones, industries, and economic strategies that have contributed to the country’s transformation. This work provides the foundation for an expanding research program across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and the wider Gulf region.

CGES investigates entrepreneurship across multiple dimensions, including entrepreneurial history, economic diversification, family enterprise, government entrepreneurship, private enterprise, startups, innovation, technology, investment, international business, free zones, entrepreneurial ecosystems, cities, institutions, markets, and emerging industries. Particular attention is given to the interaction between government and entrepreneurship within Gulf economies, where public institutions, national development strategies, sovereign investment, infrastructure, regulatory environments, and private entrepreneurial initiative have often combined in distinctive ways to accelerate economic development and create new industries and markets.

A defining characteristic of CGES is its commitment to studying the Gulf as a living entrepreneurial laboratory. Research extends beyond documentary and historical sources into field observation, entrepreneurial environments, conferences, exhibitions, institutions, companies, business districts, universities, innovation centers, and conversations with people participating directly in the region’s transformation. This allows the Center to connect historical investigation with contemporary entrepreneurial reality and to document economic and entrepreneurial change while it is taking place.

The Center forms part of the broader intellectual ecosystem of INNOVAE School and maintains a particularly close relationship with the INNOVAE Center for Entrepreneurial Business Architecture (CEBA). While CEBA develops Entrepreneurial Business Architecture (EBA) as a broader discipline for understanding and developing entrepreneurs and enterprises, CGES provides a geographically concentrated environment for investigating how entrepreneurship operates within real economies undergoing rapid transformation. Its research also connects with the INNOVAE Center for Social and Economic Transformation (CSET) through the study of how entrepreneurship, enterprise, institutions, investment, and economic development can influence wider social and economic change.

The ambition of CGES is to build a comprehensive and continuously expanding body of knowledge about the entrepreneurial development of the Gulf—past, present, and future. Through research, publications, articles, books, projects, field investigation, and the CGES Podcast, the Center seeks to document the entrepreneurs, enterprises, institutions, ideas, strategies, and economic transformations that have shaped the region while developing a deeper understanding of the forces that will influence its future. The Gulf is not only experiencing transformation; it provides an extraordinary environment in which to study how entrepreneurial economies are built.

About the Center The INNOVAE Center for Gulf Entrepreneurial Studies (CGES) is a research center dedicated to the systematic study of entrepreneurship, enterprise, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and economic transformation across the Gulf.
